Using honey as a cough remedy?

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

I am 37 weeks pregnant with an awful cough. It’s a dry non-productive cough and it’s very irritating to my lungs and throat so I’m looking to find a natural solution as I have have yet to find a cough medicine safe for pregnant women. I remember hearing that honey can be used to stop a cough, but how would I take it? Is it just mixed with warm water or tea? Or do you just eat spoonfuls of it? Any other remedies you have are welcome as well.

Sometimes a cough like that is due to post nasal drip from the sinuses. When you have a head cold, sometimes you might want to sleep with your head elevated. Also, try irrigating your sinuses, with either or netti pot or using a small plastic spray bottle filled with a mild salt water solution.

If you use hydrogen peroxide to wash out your mouth, dilute it first half with water, and make sure you don’t swallow it. You can also use a 1/2 peroxide and water solution for brushing your teeth — it gets rid of a lot of bacteria along the gum line.

I have heard of honey as having properties that fight infections. I have also heard one shouldn’t give babies honey. I don’t know how that applies to pregnancy.

You can also make a tea from a piece of ginger root. Peel it, chop it up, and cover with boiling water for a few minutes. Then sweeten the tea and sip.

Good luck.

tried the ginger tea, salt water gargle, robitussin liqui gel and takin antibiotics now.im annoyin the people around me even they dont speak-i feel the cough annoys them.:D

Drop the liquid gels and get a Robitussin syrup–it’s probably just some sort of allergy. An OTC anti-tussive will work. You can also try taking some cough drops with you when you have to be around people.

Remember–if it’s productive, don’t stop it! =D

I have this really irritating tickly dry cough…I’m waking everyone up, how can i get rid of it?

it’s a really dry cough and this constant tickle in my through.

Any suggs?

Thanks

A non-productive, dry, tickly or irritating cough, in which no phlegm is coughed up can, be treated with a cough suppressant to reduce the cough reflex. Cough suppressants include pholcodine, dextromethorphan and codeine. Other cough suppressants include simple linctus, glycerin and lemon and honey, which coat and soothe the back of the throat.

Antihistamines such as diphenhydramine and promethazine reduce the cough reflex and also dry up nasal secretions, which can be useful for coughs that are caused by a postnasal drip (mucus running down the back of the throat), or are associated with a cold.

Many doctors say cough medicines are useless and recommend sucking a boiled sweet and keeping hydrated.
Some people swear by warm drinks with honey

Try a few remedies out, but not all at once.

ive been drinking like 4 cups of hot tea a day for my cough.can the hot water actually be irritating my throat?

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

ive been drinking alot of hot tea (mostly just hot tea) cuz i was sick and left with a bad cough for a week…can the hot water actually be irritating my throat instead of helping it cuz my cough isnt getting any better…and ive been putting honey every time…is alot of honey everyday bad?

Yes, the hot water could be irritating your throat in that the heat may cause swelling to worsen. You can counter that by gargling salt water or taking something like ibuprofen to reduce swelling.
However, just 4 cups of hot tea through the day is unlikely to exacerbate the problem much.
After a cold/flu, you can have a cough that lasts a week or two. It’s pretty common and perhaps it’s due to bronchitis.

Honey can contain bacteria that has the potential to make you sick if you consume too much of it, but I doubt you’re using enough to have any problems.

to help the cough, do a home remedy my mum taught me. go inside your bathroom. run a HOT bath as hot as it can be. close the dragon so the tub fills up. let the steam soothe your cough. it always worked for me. try it. make sure the bathroom door is closed so the steam can stay inside. hope you feel better. and if that doesnt work see your doctor ASAP DONT RISK HAVING H1N1!!!!!

It comes out of nowhere. It’s an itching cough. Very dry. It’s like a tickle in my throat.

Where is this coming from and am I sick?

Well, depending on where you live it could simply be a common cold due to the season change. But if that’s not the case, I’d give it a bit before you start worrying. I get those every year. In the morning I gargle some water. Buy some cough drops and you should be fine. You shouldn’t have to worry about the cough unless it starts hurting your chest whenever you start coughing. That’s when you should get it checked by a doctor.

There is no effective medicine for a cough anyway. My doctor told me that. You should use honey and lemon.
