I’ve had a slight cold for the last couple of days and now it has turned into a persistent cough. I’m pretty sure it’s gotten to the point where my throat is just so irritated that once I start coughing, it’s hard to stop. I’ve tried DayQuil, cough medicine, Halls throat lozenges, hot tea, and cold water, and so far nothing has helped calm my cough at all. Any other suggestions?
To be honest, it sounds like it might very well merit a doctor’s visit. Common ‘colds’ can easily be something more serious and would involve coughing, such as bronchitis, tuberculosis, and pneumonia. If you can afford to go to the doctor, then after perhaps giving it a few more days just to be sure, you should go. It doesn’t hurt to be careful. Otherwise-
All of those remedies should have had an effect, which is why that it seems possible that it’s more severe, or that you’re just a very susceptible-to-attack person as far as sickness goes.
Cepacol is generally given to help. It comes in a variety of flavors and costs about a buck and a half at Wal-mart, the lemon honey being recommended, and it more or less numbs your mouth and throat for a time.
Tea with lemon, and or honey, likely the latter would be best is always recommended. If it’s not working towards soothing it [because of course, there is no quick-fix cure], it really could be a bit more serious than you might think.
Drinking a lighter carbonated beverage, such as tonic water [with a bit of flavoring is fine], or a lemon-lime soda drink can help as well. Soda in general isn’t great for your health, but the burn can help soothe a cough for a time and settle your stomach.
Drink plenty of water and get plenty of rest. Your body will heal faster, and it never hurts to be hydrated. Also, a bit of exercise will get your body pumping the right hormones to help with pain and mood, and healing, and even help you ’sweat out’ the sickness a bit.
Also, gross as it might sound, clearing your throat and expelling the mucous infection [if there is one] is also a help. Keeping the infection in your body defeats the purpose of rejecting it in the first place.
