Have you tried a humidifier or vaporizer?

Also, you need to make sure the child's nasal cavities are clear.

In a lot of cases, people start breathing through their mouth when they are sleeping for some reason or another. Usually congestion and nasal swelling. Your nose has hairs and mucus that filter and moisten the air you breathe before it hits your trachea, bronchial tubes, etc. When you breathe through your mouth, you bypass this mechanism which leads to a dry cough, bronchial irritation, etc.

Simply adding some moisture to the air should stop the dry cough. Winter air is naturally dryer because it cold air doesn't hold moisture as well as dry air are due to the speed of the molecules and the distance they are apart.

You can buy a decent humidifier for under 30 bucks at the store. They also work great for having adding moisture to your skin in the winter months. I can't live without mine.
References :
mouth breather at night, especially in the winter

cough medicines are not now allowed to be sold for under 6 years old except glycerol which coats the throat and can stop the irritation. As someone said antihistamine such as piriton may help. Vicks rubbed on chest and back is also a good remedy. If it continues see doctor. PS Covonia is a good cough medicine but not allowed for 4 year olds.
References :
me - pharmacy assistant

Good air circulation may help, like having a window slightly open on the child catch. A teaspoon of glycerin will help coat his/her throat and ease the tickle a bit, but if you don't have glycerin to hand you can try a teaspoon of honey or golden syrup, something like that.

Rubbing a bit of vick vapour rub on his/her collar area might also help.
References :
My grandson has this and his doctor told his mum to give him liquid piriton which did help. Also l would advise keeping a bowl of water in his bedroom as the air maybe to dry in there, put in under the radiator.
